Running, that's all I had been doing for the past three
days. But why? I kept asking myself. "Because You don't belong
there." I whispered to the wind.
3 DAYS EARLIER
"Look alive, Sunshine! 109 in the sky but the pigs won't quit! You're here
with me: Dr. Death Defying. I'll be your surgeon, your proctor, your
helicopter, Pumpin' out the slaughtermatic sounds to keep you alive. A system failure for the masses, anti-matter for the master plan louder than
God's revolver and twice as shiny! This one's for all of you rock'n'rollers,
all you crash queens and motor babies listen up! The future is
bulletproof! The aftermath is secondary! It's time to do it now and
do it loud! Killjoys, make some noise!"
"Adriana! What's that racket??!!" My mother screamed from downstairs.
I quickly shut off the radio and threw it in my closet. "What are you
talking about?!!" I screamed back down. There was no answer so I assumed
she had gone back to what she was doing. I let out a sigh of relief, no one in
the house knew I still had a radio. Even if they did, they didn't know I
listened to Killjoy radio. I stared at the contents of my closet, all black,
gray, and white. Ew. I pushed them aside on the rack and stared at the colorful
clothing I had saved and found through out the years. I flop down on my bed,
one day, one day soon, I will get out of here and join the killjoys. I stare at
the window on my other wall, and see the splash of raindrops on the glass.
One day when it's not raining.
BACK TO WHERE THE STORY BEGAN
I zipped open my backpack and stared at the contents, a little bit of water,
next to no food, and a pair of bloody knives. Not enough to last me the rest of
the week. I zipped it back up and stared at the crescent moon, that had just
risen, smiling down at me, I grimaced. How could anything be smiling anymore?
It seemed almost impossible to me, at least. I stood up with a grunt, might as
well keep walking. It was better to travel by night when it was hard to be
spotted out here, rather then during the day when it was way to hot, and
freakishly easy to be spotted by who-knows-what. I came to a road that looked
seldom used and started to cross it. Before I knew it, headlights blurred my
vision and everything went black, as in blacker than it already had been.
"What are we supposed to do with her?"
"I don't know! You hit her!"
"It's not my fault! She was the one walking in the road!"
"Guys, I think she's waking up!"
Great, now I was hearing voices. Hold on, those voices weren't in my
head. I moaned and blinked my eyes slowly. "What the f*** just
happened?" I mumbled. I opened my eyes fully to four faces staring down at
me. The first had bright red hair and a round-ish face, the second had blond
hair and sharper features, the third had bushy brown hair and wore dark shades,
which was weird because it was the middle of the night, and the fourth had
lanky, dark hair that touched his shoulders.
"Well, you sorta got hit by a car if that's what you're wondering."
The one with red hair answered.
"Oh. That clears things up." I muttered and started to stand up, but
the world was spinning way faster then it was supposed to and I almost fell
down again. A sturdy pair of arms caught me before I could hit the pavement.
"C'mon guys, let's get her into the car." Red-hair ordered. Before I
could protest, I was shoved into their car, in between the one with dark hair
and the one with bushy hair.
"Who ARE you?! I exclaimed.
"I'm Party Poison." Answered the one with red hair.
"I'm Kobra Kid." Answered the one with blonde hair.
"Fun ghoul." Said the one with black hair.
"And I'm Jet star." Said the one with brown hair. I sat there in
shock for a minute, those weren't regular names, those were Killjoy names!
"You got a name kid?" Party Poison questioned.
"Uh...." I answered smartly. What could i tell them? Not Sunday, i
hated that name. "Adrenaline Sunshine." I answered off the top of my
head.
"Cool name, Sunshine." He nodded. There was a long moment of silence
and I stared at my hands.
"So, you guys are Killjoys?" I asked.
"Yeah, aren't you?" Jet star replied.
"Oh, well, sort of. I mean, yeah I am." I blushed. That was a stupid
answer, I was totally a Killjoy! I looked at my clothes, they were certainly
colorful enough, even if they were the only colorful ones I currently owned.
I looked over at Ghoul and could barely make out his face in the moon light,
his eyes glanced over at me and smiled. I felt myself blushing and quickly
looked away.
"You got a base we can drop you off at, Sunshine?" Poison asked.
"No, I'm sort of on my own at the moment." I explained.
Poison looked at Kobra, he nodded and Kobra shrugged. "You can crash with
us tonight then." Kobra explained turning to face me from the front seat.
It took all my strength not to look as happy as I really was, so I nodded. He
turned back around. I smiled to myself, this was it! My new life was beginning
and I could officially kiss my home in battery city goodbye.
We pulled up to an abandoned dinner in the middle of nowhere and
quickly filed out of the car. I looked up at the sign which read DI_E_. I tried
to convince myself that at one point it had actually read Dinner and not Die. I
almost didn't notice Jet disappearing through a wooden door, completely covered
in graffiti and ran to catch up. Inside looked a bit friendlier than the
outside in my opinion but not by much. "Ghoul, go grab Sunshine the extra
sleeping bag." Poison ordered. Ghoul nodded and disappeared down a
hallway. Just as I forced myself to relax a bit, a heavy hand grabbed my
shoulder. I let out a small yelp, and quickly covered my mouth with my hand and
looked behind me. A tall, biker style man looked down at me through bushy
eyebrows and a dark beard.
"Who're you?" He grunted.
"Relax Doc, Sunshine's with us." Poison explained. He nodded and took
his hand off my shoulder.
"Grace is asleep, and Show Pony is...somewhere." He said and walked
into another room, slamming the door behind him.
"Found the sleeping bag your highness." Ghoul exclaimed
sarcastically, walking back in with the sleeping bag under one arm. He tossed
it in my direction, I barely caught it, and not in the most graceful manor
either. A smirk appeared on his face but disappeared when he caught my glare.
"Great, let's all get some sleep! I'm exhausted." Kobra replied.
I followed them into a room in the back with five sleeping bags layed out
across the floor, with barely enough room for a sixth. But I squeezed in next
to Ghoul anyhow. In the middle lay a small girl, probably about 10, fast asleep
and mumbling a little about cookies. I smiled a little, she was probably Grace.
I took off my jacket and stripped down to my shorts and tank top. It took a
while to get settled and I just stared at the ceiling for what seemed like
forever.
"So you're name's Sunshine." A voice whispered. I nearly jumped out
of my sleeping bag.
"Relax! You're really jumpy you know that?" I turned my head to see
Ghoul trying to hide a playful smile.
"Yeah, what'd you thin k my name was?" I asked with biting sarcasm.
"Oh, I don't know, you look like a Fred, or maybe a Billy."
I couldn't help but laugh a little, even though I tried my hardest not to.
"How long have you been on the run?" He asked.
I tensed, "How do you know I've been running?" I asked accusingly.
He shrugged. "The dirt all over your face was a dead giveaway." This
time he turned and stared at the ceiling. I suddenly felt extremely
self-conscious. I had dirt all over my face? Why didn't anyone tell me? I
shrugged the self-consciousness thoughts from my mind.
"4 or 5 days." I answered out of nowhere. My respond was answered
with an ever classy snore. I smiled to myself and rolled over to try and get
some sleep, which was highly unlikely.
"Look alive, Sunshine!" A voice yelled in my ear. I
opened my eyes sleepily to Ghouls face in mine.
"F*** you." I mumbled and sat up.
"Well, now we know she's a morning person!" He smirked. All four of
them were already fully dressed, even Grace. Poison tossed me a bundle of
clothes, "We'll be in the kitchen, join us when you're done." He
ordered and they all marched into the kitchen with Grace skipping along behind
them. I looked at what clothes I had been given. A red sports jacket, black
jeans, a pair of biker gloves, and some motorcycle boots. I put them on as fast
as I could and looked at myself in a mirror in the bathroom. It looked good but
needed a few tweaks, so I took a pair of scissors from the bathroom drawer and
turned the biker gloves into fingerless gloves, and I found a piece of cloth,
drew a Sun with an X through the circle and hastily secured it onto the jacket
with a few bobby pins. I'd sew it on later. Finally, I put my hair in pigtails,
splashed water on my face to get some of the dirt off, and walked out to join
everyone else in the kitchen.
I walked in on them eating food out of BL/ind marked cans. They all turned to
get a look at me and by the looks on their faces I must've cleaned up nicely.
"Morning." I smiled and sat down next to Grace at the table. She
passed me a can of food along with a smile and I dug in. I hadn't realized how
hungry I had gotten, of course, i hadn't had much of anything to eat yesterday
at all. All four of the guys looked at me with surprised expressions.
I looked up, "What? I'm hungry." I snapped through a mouthful of
food. Jet snorted but stopped when Poison elbowed him in the ribs, which was my
turn to giggle.
When we were done I followed them out to the car,
"Sunshine!" I turned around, Jet was calling me from the BL/ind
vending machine over by the front of the building. I walked over to him and he
handed me a white ray gun.
"You might need this." I took it. It was light weight and felt nice
in my hand. I pointed it at the ground and did an experimental shoot.
"Thanks!" I said looking back at him. He nodded and I followed him to
the car, strapping the gun to my belt.
"Hey Jet! Have you seen this one?" Kobra called. He was leaning
against the hood of the car flipping through a magazine. Jet snatched it from
him and put it back on the rack in front of the dinner. I caught a glimpse of
it for a second, which I now wish I hadn't.
"So where are we off to?" I asked climbing in the back seat.
"We're going to find you a base." Poison answered lowering the hood
do the car became a convertible. I felt my heart sink in my chest. Secretly, I
had hoped they'd let me stay with them. But I understood that Six was a lot of
people and they had Grace to look after, so I nodded and kept quiet through the
entire drive.
After about a half an hour of driving we came to an apartment
looking building just inside of Zone 1. I felt dangerously close to Battery
City, no matter how I tried, my guard would not go down. Poison stepped up and
rang one of the door bells. A few seconds later the door opened and a girl
stood there glaring, but her glare softened when she saw who it was at the
door.
"Well, if it isn't the Fab Four!" She exclaimed.
"How you guys doing?" She looked happy to see them. Poison and the
girl hugged quickly and in a friendly manor.
"Just fine, Cypher!" He answered. "What about you?"
"Ah, you know, staying out of trouble for the most part." She said
putting her hand behind her head and letting out a quick yawn.
"Well, I brought a new recruit we sort of, ah, hit last night." I
motioned towards me and I stepped forward.
Cypher looked me up and down for a minute as if examining me. "Sorry
Poison. No deal, I got a fine crew of my own. Why don't you keep her? You could
use a girl on your team that isn't ten." She smirked. Poison glared at her
but she just looked calmly back at him. "See you 'round." She said
and closed the door in his face.
I stood there awkwardly, "Look, if I'm too much of a burden I can always
go back to walking." I stared down at my feet, no one said anything until
I felt a pair of arms around me.
"C'mon Poison! Can we keep it?" I heard Ghoul whine. I covered my
face with my hand so no one would see my smiling. Another pair of arms wrapped
around my waist. I peeked out from between my fingers to see Grace smiling with
big puppy eyes at Poison.
"Fine! She can stay with us!" He sighed, exasperated. We all piled
back into the car and drove back to the base, with Grace jumping up and down in
her seat.
We pulled up to DI_E_ but what we saw wasn't a pretty sight. Magazine's
were strewn everywhere, the wooden door ripped off it's old hinges, and a ray
gun lying near it. We all piled out and I kept a close eye on Grace. Poison
dashed in and dashed out faster than I thought possible.
"They know where we are." He grimaced and climbed back into the car.
"Wh-what?" I stammered. They weren't after me were they? No that's
stupid, I told myself. Why would they be after me? Why would they be after any
of us?
Ghoul walked out with all of the sleeping bags and stuffed them into the trunk,
along with multiple cans of BL/ind brand Power Pudding. Then he, Kobra, and Jet
climbed back into the Trans Am and we took off, faster than any car should be
able to go. I looked next to me to find Grace sticking her entire head out of
the window. "Grace! Get back in-" I started to shout but my words
were interrupted by extremely loud rock music. Kobra had reached up and turned
the radio on and up. I started to laugh, Jet was whipping his head back and
forth, with Ghoul accompanying him with an air guitar. I joined the party with
air drums. This is definitely the life i had run away for.
